Rain, Racism, and Destruction

Crazy, lightning-flinging, wind-blasting storms rolled around all weekend. We almost had a hurrican-force storm plop overhead on Friday - and let me tell you, driving around in that after work was not fun. I pulled into a gas station after the world turn into white water and wind, only to flee as the overhead covering swayed alarmingly in the wind - then pulled around into the lee of a building only to watch powerlines come crashing down. Yikes! Finally made it to my destination: new training for a community dialogue on racism. I've already started a new group at the local PBS station - it'll be an interesting 6 weeks.

Most of the weekend was full of destruction, as we tackle renovations for my in-laws' house. I got to play with a sledgehammer on Saturday, it was most useful in releasing pent-up tensions. Most of Sunday was dusty, and we made progress prepping two bedrooms for painting. Also pulled up carpets - the beloved will be laying new subfloors soon...

Sans camera

I know - no pictures in a while. That doesn't mean I haven't been crafty and productive. I have been! But I have discovered that Flickr doesn't display things that are scanned, only photos, and I am still currently sans camera. Am digging through our home to determine once and for all if the camera has truly disappeared, and am contemplating whether or not the budget can bear a new camera...

Moppet alert!

Hey-ho, Moppet is on her way into the world this morning! My sister called this morning just before my alarm clock, and my sleep-fuzzed brain only grasped the gist of our conversation:

L'Ange: On our way to the hospital...sleep-fuzz, mumble mumble...baby's coming...
Slothgirl: Baby's coming! Yay!
L'Ange: Yay! sleep-fuzz, mumble mumble...and then in recovery for two hours...sleep-fuzz, mumble mumble...call Mom and Dad.
Slothgirl: Baby's coming! Yay!

And after staring blankly at my phone for several minutes, I tried to figure out if I was supposed to call our parents, or if she was now calling our parents. Just to be safe, I called and spoke with my mom - who sounded equally sleep-fuzzed - and then crawled out of bed to start my day. My dad called back to find out what the message was, since having been filtered through me and then my mom, the only message he got was, "Baby's coming!"

In crafty news, I finished another panel for one of the baby quilts this weekend and am plotting out next steps. Pictures tomorrow, I think.

The pic included with this post shows a postcard I made last week for some friends in Colorado. We worked together in Japan, and I was thinking about how green the late summer rice fields are at this time of year, the swarms of dragonflies during the day and fireflies at night... Also had Nick Drake's "Pink Moon" running in a loop through my head.

Potential obituary

QuizGalaxy!
'What will your obituary say?' at QuizGalaxy.com

We actually have a friend in Chicago who writes obituaries for a living. Obviously, this is just for fun, but I like it! Brief, ambiguous, a little odd. I don't have a cat yet...

Stitch#8 & dragonfly

Stitch#8 & dragonfly, originally uploaded by lemonsugar.

A detail from the right-side panel of Babysocks' quilt. I really need to practice making dragonflies - this one came out looking far less graceful and swoopy than I'd hoped! Also, the blue stitches show a detail I'd based on sharonb's Stitch#8 from 100days/100stitches.

Chocolate Chip ESP

Driving home from work yesterday, I had this happy baking feeling. Thoughts of icing-topped cupcakes and chocolate chip cookies danced through my head. Then I get home and voila! the Beloved has made a batch of giant chocolate chip cookies - half in the cupcake tins and half in the heart-shaped, mini springform pans. Chocolate chip cupcakes! I think that's the best kind of ESP.

Making slow progress on the quilt for babysocks - so much fun to embroider while half-watching Antiques Roadshow and ghastly Hell's Kitchen episodes. I've used one of the stiches from sharonb's 100 details/100 days. Of course, lacking beads and straightness (oops!) it's not nearly so pretty, but I'm having fun. Lots to learn! Pictures coming tomorrow.
