Spoons and hips and stealing pics

[ Crafting courtesy of the Queen via Jacqueline via George Lyons. ]

I am from a wooden spoon, from McDonalds and radio antennas.
I am from the houses like sea glass (crazed, buoyant,
pummeled smooth to the touch).

I am from sea kelp,
from sagebrush and cloud forest canopies,
from bayous and rice fields
and cities.

I am from hula and hips,
from Piilani and Mary Theresa. I'm from
family bonds and semi-secrets and matriarchs,
from 'You can become anything'
and 'Be silent until spoken to.'
I am from fidgeting in pews and being damned
and older gods
of sea and sky and land.
I am from angels
and oak trees, from wind,
from water.

I'm from the islands and a mendicant's path,
great bowls of rice, fried spam.
From the December sky of kamikaze
above my grandmother's head;
the shattered windows around my father
after the riot, then the bombing,
and the dead.

I am from years of hoarded pictures, squirreled away
in drawers, bits of memory snatched and gathered
bartered, stolen, permanently 'borrowed'
with every family visit
taken as directed
by bitterness, love and hope.
